Features for driver-partners who are Deaf or Hard of Hearing

Unemployment or underemployment in the Deaf or Hard of Hearing community is close to 70%¹. At Uber, we are proud to provide earning opportunities to drivers who are Deaf or Hard of Hearing across the world and in more than 200 US cities. That’s why in 2015 we built a suite of features including flashing trip request notifications, text-only communication, and notifications so riders knew they were being matched with a driver who is Deaf or Hard of Hearing.

This tool teaches riders simple phrases in American Sign Language, including how to sign their name, say hello, thank you, and goodbye. We hope that these tools will help further improve the driving and riding experience and start a conversation between riders and drivers who are Deaf and Hard of Hearing.
